Teaching Math with the iPhone

Everyone knows, whether they like it or not, that math is the most important subject in school.  Even if you don’t think you need it for your career, chances are you’re going to run into situations where knowing math really helps pretty often.  As I wrote before, education apps are becoming more common and technology is no stranger to teachers and classrooms these days.  So of course there are tons of apps for teaching kids mathematics being developed.  Many of these apps are directed at children still in elementary school and feature simple lessons about basic arithmetic.  There are also several apps that cover all the bases, from elementary math to calculus and linear algebra.  Growing up I was very much into math but everyone else wasn’t, so when I used a few of these apps I thought about how helpful these apps would have been for people who didn’t quite “get” it.  Read the rest of this entry »

A Cool Tool For School: EMD PTE

With the increasing use and acceptance of mobile technology in classrooms, teachers and students continually gain access to more and better resources for whatever subject is being covered.  Laptops are a common site in most college classrooms and professors have already taken advantage of online education resources.  So far this adaptation of technology has been successful and developers are now attempting to achieve the same success in the age of mobile technology.  A nice and polished example of these tools is EMD PTE.  EMD PTE is a new education app compatible with both the iPhone and the iPad which provides teachers and students extensive information about the periodic table of the elements.

Minding Your P's and Q's: The Grammar App

Can you remember the grammar lessons you had in elementary school?  High school?  Chances are you’ve forgotten most of the grammar lessons from your school days (and it’s not really your fault).  Grammar isn’t taught enough to stick; it isn’t covered as well as topics like science and math which are seen as more important to success.  However, reading and writing skills are still highly valued abilities these days because no matter what media we communicate through, these skills are necessary for proper understanding.  With the Grammar App, you can relearn the rules of grammar and refresh your writing ability.

The Potential of 3D Apps

The concept of 3D media is not a new phenomenon.  The idea has been around for decades and has been utilized in movies and video games for years.  But why is it still a widely-appealing, highly marketable concept?  It’s because 3D brings whatever we’re seeing or interacting with closer to the way we perceive reality.  And although “3D” games and movies are visual deceptions, they bring the media closer to the world which we, the users, are actually a part of.  Until recently, 3D media has been limited to the silver screen and expensive gaming platforms.  The iPhone and the relatively new iPad provide new and unexplored ways of using 3D technology.  Never before have users had the opportunity for so much 3D interaction.  Both platforms give users direct visual and manual access to something that before had been at a distance to them.  This is also new for developers who need to make their 3D apps as intuitive and appealing as 2D apps.  Because these are uncharted waters for both users and developers, the future of 3D apps is uncertain.  But since this form of display is so interesting, it’s worth speculating about the path that such apps will follow.
